Like all technical translations, translating technical drawings is a specialized task that should only be entrusted to experts. Who are these experts? And how do we handle technical drawing translations at Bireta Professional Translations? Find out below.
Who translates technical drawings?
The translation of technical drawings is carried out by experienced translators who specialize in the specific field related to the drawing. These experts often include civil, automation, electrical, mechanical, gas, and IT engineers, as well as translators registered with The Polish Federation of Engineering Associations (NOT).
How do we handle technical drawing translations at Bireta?
First and foremost, we establish a terminology database before we start translation of technical drawings to ensure consistency with other existing documents, that may also need to be translated.
After that, we offer two approaches, depending on the client’s preferences.
- Preparing a bilingual table with entries from the drawing and their translations.
- Applying the translation directly to the original drawing provided by the client.
The first method is recommended, if you employ individuals skilled in specialized software for creating technical drawings.
Otherwise, you may want to leave the job to the language services provider. They will apply the translation directly to the original drawing. At Bireta this is done using the software the drawing was initially created with. This ensures the highest quality result. The client receives a finished product, i.e. the technical drawing, looking exactly the same as the original, except with text in the target language.

It is also important to note that at Bireta we do not rely on machine translation engines for technical drawings. Upon request, we can overlay translated labels on non-editable drawings. We also take on the translation of drawings’ labels provided by the customer. In such cases, sending the source drawing for review is recommended, as it helps the translator understand the context in which the terms appear on the technical drawing.
Professional technical drawing translation
Translation of technical drawings is usually of utmost importance for the implementation of a given project. That is why it’s crucial to consider the experience and professionalism of the service provider. At Bireta, we translate over 15,000 technical drawings per year, most of them directly in AutoCAD. Regardless of the chosen translation method, we guarantee terminological consistency within a single drawing and across multiple drawings with recurring terms.
